S.A.D. ART
The mixed media collages
featured in this mini series, S.A.D. Art,
consist of layered images on Mylar transparencies and prints on UV sensitive
paper. The neuron images featured
on Mylar and on the UV paper were initially screen printed onto small abstract
watercolour paintings. The
paintings were then copied onto Mylar transparencies, which were then layered
onto the canvases seen here.
The viewer may also
notice small blue and white images layered between the transparencies. These are UV prints made by placing UV light
sensitive paper underneath a Mylar transparency and exposing it to light via a
S.A.D. light therapy lamp generally used to treat Seasonal Affective Disorder
(S.A.D.). When exposed to the
light, the neuron image on the Mylar transfer “burns” through onto the UV
paper. The image is then developed,
by soaking the exposed UV paper in water for several minutes.
The result is a series of complex images referencing the intricate web of electrical neuro-chemical potential that is constantly ignited throughout our brain each and every millisecond. The wonder of this complex and busy organ never ceases to amaze me.
